Ojai, California

Being born and raised on the California Central Coast, I’ve had ample amount of time to thoroughly explore some of my favorite places and travel destinations within our central region, which I consider the gem of California. The central coast has a completely different culture than what is broadcasted on television reality shows based in Northern and Southern California; it’s unlike any other. It has a “west is still wild” vibe, but with a modern twist. And while plenty of Los Angeles and San Francisco bloggers claim they know a thing-or-two about our gems along the California Central Coast, I can’t help but wonder, do they really?

I’ll be sharing the places to visit, places to eat, things to do, and “where to go’s” that you may or may not find from these viral travel bloggers. But, who else better to lean on when you’re visiting these areas than a true local? Lean on me, me — A 9th generation Santa “Barbarian.”

So, with that being said, let’s get into it! The first destination I’m sharing with you on my Travel Guide page is Ojai, California. Hang on tight, you’re in for a wild ride!

OJAI, CALIFORNIA

WHO THIS TRIP IS PERFECT FOR

This trip is for someone who wants to recharge, reground, and soothe their mind…And, eat some good food while doing so.

WHERE TO STAY IN OJAI

  • Caravan Outpost – An Airstream glamping experience, a short distance away from Ojai Avenue, the downtown area of Ojai. Read about my experience in more detail by clicking here!
  • The Capri Hotel – An Oasis of harmonies between soft light and sunshine, space and place, comfort and experience.
  • Ojai Valley Inn – This is a five-star resort with more awards and accolades than I can even remotely begin to name. Nestled within a rare coastal valley on 220-oak studded acres, the iconic Ojai Valley Inn offers an abundance of active and peaceful pleasures with a legendary golf course, 31,000 square foot Spa Village, Artist Cottage & Apothecary, apiary and immersive beekeeping experience, The Farmhouse at Ojai, multiple pools and seven unique dining outlets with settings that range from fast-casual, poolside, to fine dining.

WHERE TO EAT IN OJAI

  • Little Sama – Think of it as Southern comfort food meets Asian cuisine! I never go to Ojai without stopping by Little Sama. I recommend ordering their Wagyu Cheeseburger, Chicken Sandwich, Popcorn Cauliflower, and Crispy Brussel Sprouts. ALWAYS upgrade to the tater tots if it’s an option! Located inside of Topa Topa Brewery.
  • Ojai Rôtie – Outdoor patio restaurant that makes incredible French-Lebanese style rotisserie chicken, handmade sourdough, and INCREDIBLE side dishes. The outdoor seating area is really beautiful and seems very family-friendly! I recommend ordering their chicken meal, which comes with your choice of sides. Their sides will BLOW-YOUR-MIND. Be sure to check their hours before you go!
  • The Nest – Anything you order is aesthetically beautiful, but more importantly, absolutely delicious. The Nest pushes the boundaries of classic comfort food with innovative menu items, focal pointing local produce, organic and sustainable ingredients. I tend to visit The Nest for lunch!
  • Ojai Pizza – I know, I know, I know. You’re wondering, “Why is there a pizza suggestion?” All you need to know is that you need to order the Potato Skin Pizza and you will immediately understand.

WHAT TO DO IN OJAI

  • Horse Trail Ride – Ojai has a beautiful back country that you can explore while hiking or riding horses! The Ojai Valley Trail Riding Company, owned by Susan Gruber, is without a doubt, the best option.
  • Golf Soule Park – This is a really fun golf course that won’t break your piggy bank! Leans a little more on the casual side. It’s guaranteed fun! Don’t forget your sunscreen though.
  • Explore Ojai Avenue – Ojai Avenue is the historic downtown area. There are a lot of locally owned shops, restaurants, ice cream parlors, etc. to check out.
  • Yoga – Light and Space has a beautiful yoga studio if you’re looking to move your body or meditate.
  • Find a Good Mural – I mean, sometimes you just want a cool photo for Instagram, right? Ojai is filled with lots of artistic nooks, and you can find some fun murals if you keep an eye out!

FAVORITE BOUTIQUES

  • Kariella – Cute boutique for any California girl, or anyone who is inspired by our Californian style! The boutique has everything from clothing to jewelry to home goods.
  • In the Field – Beautifully curated bohemian lifestyle boutique. I always find unique pieces for my home! Pay attention to the details, as Channon, the owner, likes to hide special finds for the discerning shopper. Personally, the aesthetic of this shop completely captures all that California is.
  • Bungalow by FIG – Unique gifts for home & garden, with a focus on local, handmade, and fair trade goods. A small selection of items are available in their online store, but there is much more to see in their Ojai shop! Great curation of home goods.

WHERE TO DRINK

  • Topa Mountain Winery – Perfect place to relax, unwind and enjoy a glass of handcrafted wine. I enjoy their red 2017 Pinot Noir, Bien Nacido and their white 2017 Malvasia Bianca. They also have specialty drinks as well! I loved their Frosé  and their Ojai Pixie Tangerine inspired drink, which you can find on their menu during the summers. Make a reservation!

WHAT NOT TO MISS IN OJAI

  • The Pink Moment – a fleeting period just before sunset when the valley walls that frame its northern edges take on a reddish alpenglow that will soothe the mind
