The California Central Coast experiences fall much differently than most places in the United States. We don’t tend to get the crunchy autumn leaves or the chilly weather until late in the season. Currently, we’re experiencing what we call, “Locals Summer,” which is when we face some of our highest temperatures.
This doesn’t mean we don’t love celebrating fall! Lots of us secretly cross our fingers for the crisp fall air, scarves, and coats to arrive early, but we have to settle for a longer summer season. Personally, I always love to kick-off my fall season by heading to the Avila Valley Barn because they truly get into the spirit of the season. Charming and charismatic, Avila Valley Barn will bring a smile to your face, whether you’re a local or a visitor.
First started in 1985, this little store started as a single table and umbrella along Avila Beach Drive inviting passerby’s attention to stop and shop. Now, it hosts thousands of visitors craving the magical fall spirit. Its become a favorite spot to buy the freshest fruit and vegetables grown locally, pick up a pie or bakery treat, stop off for lunch for their BBQ or deli, and get an ice cream on the way to Avila Beach.
Avila Valley Barn uses healthy soil practices while growing their produce. This means that they use compost, green ground cover, animal grazing, and biodiversity. They pride themselves on not using pesticides, which I personally love because I only eat organic produce.
If you don’t fall in love with this barn then you’re absolutely bonkers. I noticed it’s a little different this year, but not in a bad way! I mean, isn’t everything pretty much “different” now? They’re limiting the capacity due to Covid-19, but they’ve expanded the grounds significantly in which you can explore. This year, you enter through the bottom pasture near rows of tall sunflowers and their u-pick pumpkin patch. There’s live music while you’re waiting in line if you visit during the weekends. They’ve also grown their Sweet Shop menu and now create sugar masterpieces to enjoy while you’re perusing the property.
I can’t wait to go back again during the fall before it transitions into a winter wonderland for the holidays! Be sure to share your pumpkin photos with me if you venture to Avila Valley Barn.
